You need to take extra care when you're moving certain types of furniture, especially if they contain large pieces of glass. Glass is easily broken during a move if you don't take extra steps to protect it. So, if you're moving a glass coffee table, you need to prepare it carefully before it goes on your removalist's van. What's the best way to protect your coffee table glass?

Work Out How to Remove the Glass

Transporting your coffee table with the glass top in place is more likely to lead to accidents than if you take the glass out first and move it separately. So, your first task is to work out how to disassemble the table to the stage where you can remove the top safely.

The way you remove the glass top from your table depends on how it was put together. Sometimes, the glass simply sits on the top of the table, allowing you to push or pull it off. Some glass tops are screwed into place. A quick look at the table may show you how to get the glass off; if this doesn't work, then consult the table's manual.

Tip: if you haven't kept the manual or have lost it but you know which company made the table, then search online for an assembly guide. If you're really stuck, get your removalist to look at the table; they may know how to remove the glass.

Package Up the Glass

Once you know what you're doing, put a sheet of packing paper on the floor by the table. This should be big enough to cover at least one side of the glass top with room to go around the edges. Take the glass off the table, remembering to get help if the glass is too big for one person to hold safely, and lay it down on the paper. Wrap the paper around the glass and, if necessary, add another sheet on top to completely cover the top before taping the paper around it.

Then, for extra security, tape a couple of layers of bubble wrap around the table top. Don't stint on the tape here – a lot of tape will hold the bubble wrap in place a lot better than a few strips. Once you've added packing protection, put the glass in a box for extra security. If you don't have a big enough box, then cut up smaller cardboard boxes and use these to make a cardboard covering for the glass. Finally, write the words 'Fragile – Glass' on the box or cardboard, remembering to write on all sides so your removalists know what they are handling.

If you can't work out how to get the glass off your coffee table or if you're worried about removing it yourself, then ask your removals professional for advice on what to do next. It may be a better option to have your removalist pack up these kinds of fragile items for you.

About Me
Moving Home: Things I Have Learnt

In the past 10 years, I have moved home 7 times. As you can imagine, this has given me lots of experience. However, during the first couple of moves, not everything went to plan. For example, when I first moved house, I didn't pack my things correctly so a lot of stuff was broken in transit. During another early move, I injured myself picking up a very heavy box. Since then, I have used the services of a professional house moving company. The guys who help with the move are fantastic and they have taught me lots of neat tricks which make relocating very easy.
