Children move fast, and many parents fear moving house because of the opportunity your child has to escape an open door. If you do not have the resources to take your child elsewhere on moving day, it is vital you give forethought for their protection while the removalists are moving in and out of the house. Use these two tips to ensure you're not chasing an escaped child down the road while the removal truck is being loaded.

Alert The Removalists

It is not time effective for a removalist to shut the front door behind them each time they take belongings out to the truck, but if they are aware that you have young children in the house, then they can be watchful when the kids are near them. Because your focus will be on keeping the children occupied and out of harm's way, be sure to have a chat with the movers as soon as they arrive so they are fully aware of any special loading instructions you have. Also, let them know where you will be in the house in case they need quick clarification of your instructions.

Once the removalists open the door to start loading the truck, it is time for you to occupy the children.

Child Occupation And Location

If the weather is nice and you have a back garden, gather up your children and move them outside while the truck is loaded. Purchase a new game or colouring book to keep your children occupied while the loading takes place. By moving them outside into the garden, you are in a secure area where the kids can still play and have fun without getting underfoot of the removalists. If bad weather prevents this from happening, then choose a room in the home which can be emptied of furniture first. For example, a spare room. As soon as the furniture is out, head in there with your children and shut the door. Again, you now have a confined space where they can play without getting in the way of everyone else. Make sure you take drinks and snacks into the room so that your children don't have a need to leave the area often.

Finally, while every adult wants to micro-manage a move, trust in the removal company that you have hired to do their job properly. Yours is not the first move they have done, and they know where to find you in the house if they have any specific questions.

About Me
Moving Home: Things I Have Learnt

In the past 10 years, I have moved home 7 times. As you can imagine, this has given me lots of experience. However, during the first couple of moves, not everything went to plan. For example, when I first moved house, I didn't pack my things correctly so a lot of stuff was broken in transit. During another early move, I injured myself picking up a very heavy box. Since then, I have used the services of a professional house moving company. The guys who help with the move are fantastic and they have taught me lots of neat tricks which make relocating very easy.
