What to Do With Your Furniture When You Move Into a Fixer-Upper

It's not always possible to do essential work on your new fixer-upper before you have to move out of your old home. This could leave you with the problem of having to move all your stuff in before you've had time to get your new property ready.

Furniture can be a big problem here. For example, if you're putting down new floors or even just laying wood flooring or carpets, then your furniture gets in the way. It sits on floor space that you need to work on. Furniture can even be a pain when you're working on other projects. It blocks walls when you're replastering or decorating and needs covering over to protect it from DIY work.

While you can just move your furniture around to clear a room or floor space when you need it, this is time-consuming. Plus, heavier or fragile pieces may need to be moved by a few people. It also leaves you with furniture dotted around in odd places, getting in your way and on your nerves. Do you have other options?

Put All Your Furniture in One Place

If you know you'll need clear floors or walls for a while after you move in, then unpack your non-essential furniture into one place rather than putting individual pieces in their rooms. For example, you could store all your large and heavy pieces in your garage, if you have one. Alternatively, you could use a couple of empty rooms that you won't be working in initially for furniture storage. Unload all your pieces into these rooms and then move them out once rooms are ready for them.

Use Moving Storage

Alternatively, if you prefer to keep your furniture out of your home for a while or don't have places where it can go yet, then store it somewhere else. For example, if your removalist offers storage services, then you could use these to keep your furniture safe for a while.

Moving storage is tacked between the pickup and delivery elements of a move. So, instead of having all your furniture delivered with the rest of your possessions, you arrange for it to be stored until you're ready to move it in. This keeps furniture that could get in your way in a secure location and out of harm's way while you get your fixer upper ready.

If moving storage looks like a good way of making your first few fixer upper projects easier, talk to your removalist about options and costs.

About Me
Moving Home: Things I Have Learnt

In the past 10 years, I have moved home 7 times. As you can imagine, this has given me lots of experience. However, during the first couple of moves, not everything went to plan. For example, when I first moved house, I didn't pack my things correctly so a lot of stuff was broken in transit. During another early move, I injured myself picking up a very heavy box. Since then, I have used the services of a professional house moving company. The guys who help with the move are fantastic and they have taught me lots of neat tricks which make relocating very easy.
